Multitouch has moved from Hollywood fantasy
to geometric product growth in a 6 year period.

John Underkoffler’s work at the MIT Media Lab actually started in the mid-90’s, Fingerworks, who sold itself to Apple was actually producing multitouch products at the time Minority Report came out, in 2002.

That said, the level of public interest and the rate of adoption has been incredible. What characteristics do gestural interfaces need to gain/maintain for them to maintain their magic?
